Storytelling is what connects us to our humanity. Both women and men are first-person narrators of stories that “dilate” their life, linking them to their past while providing a glimpse into their future. Since humans first walked the earth, they have told stories, before even the written word or oral language.

Telling a story through fashion is the mission of Bufandy.

Bufandy products tell the story of handcrafted tales. The brand creates fair and natural products in cooperation with South-American family businesses, thus contributing to the social and economic progress of its partners and their families.

Alpaca is one of the brand’s favorite materials. Alpaca lives high up in the mountains where the climate can be cold and harsh. This is why it produces durable fibers, extremely light, warm and soft. Bufandy’s statement piece – the shawl – is made of 80% of alpaca and 20% of acrylic. Fashion meets function once you experience the extreme softness and strength of this blend.

At Bufandy, contemporary trends and traditions are brought together by creating fashionable products with a story. While age-old traditions remain cherished, the combination is sought with contemporary fashion, so that all Bufandy designs exude a modern as well as a traditional feeling.

The story of Bufandy is also the story of travel guide Dorien Straathof.

Dorien: “As a traveler, you come into contact with the local population and its culture. In the highlands of the Andes, I was impressed by the beautiful colorful fabrics, often handmade using centuries-old traditional techniques. However, the sale to tourists is tough. There are too much color and pattern on the offer. And that’s how I came up with the idea of Bufandy. I wanted to encourage the local talented artisans to look beyond their borders, and thus help them to take a step forward. “

Looking for collaboration with talented and creative craftsmen, Dorien met Fabian and his family in a small community in the north of Ecuador. Fabian is a traditional weaver and the main supplier of Bufandy.

Bufandy’s motto ‘Responsible trade, not aid’ aims at creating value for all parties involved in the long term. With this in mind, the brand wants to make a modest contribution in bringing the world balance more into balance.
